Properties
Tellurides are key semiconductor materials, valued for their photoelectric and thermoelectric properties, making them indispensable in solar, infrared, and energy applications. Tellurium exists in two main forms:
Crystalline Tellurium
- A brittle, silvery-white solid with metallic luster
Amorphous Tellurium
- A dark brown powder
Applications
Solar Energy
- Cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin-film solar cells are one of the largest end uses of tellurium, providing a cost-effective, scalable path for renewable power generation.
Thermoelectrics
- Bismuth telluride (Bi₂Te₃) is one of the most mature thermoelectric materials, with excellent room-temperature performance.
- Applications include waste-heat recovery, solid-state cooling, pollution-free refrigeration, and consumer electronics.
Metallurgy
- Used as an alloying element to improve strength and corrosion resistance in steels and nonferrous alloys.
Chemicals & Catalysts
- Tellurium compounds are used as rubber dispersants, improving elasticity and durability.
- Tellurium-based catalysts are widely applied in petroleum cracking and coal hydrogenation, enhancing oxidation, halogenation, and hydrogenation processes.
Optics & Electronics
- Tellurium dioxide (TeO₂) single crystals possess excellent acousto-optic properties.
- Key applications include laser marking, engraving, spectrum analysis, and infrared detection systems.
